Principal / Senior Control & Instrumentation Engineer

An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced Control & Instrumentation Engineer to join our client's established engineering team in Pretoria. This role offers the opportunity to work on complex process control and instrumentation systems, providing technical expertise across instrumentation, DCS/PLC, ESD, functional safety, and control systems while contributing to the successful delivery of engineering projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide engineering expertise in control and instrumentation across process and industrial projects.
• Develop and apply process control solutions, instrumentation systems, and control elements.
• Work with DCS, PLC, and ESD systems across the engineering and project lifecycle.
• Apply functional safety principles and relevant standards, including IEC 61508 and intrinsic safety requirements.
• Provide technical input on flow, temperature, pressure, level, and other process instrumentation.
• Review and resolve complex control and instrumentation problems, ensuring practical and effective solutions.
• Provide technical guidance and leadership to engineering teams and contribute to the successful execution of projects.
• Liaise with clients and project stakeholders, providing clear explanations of complex technical systems and problem statements.
• Prepare accurate technical reports, documentation, and engineering deliverables.
• Support business development activities and contribute to marketing engineering services.
• Work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team while taking ownership of assigned tasks and deliverables.

Requirements

• B Eng, BSc Eng, BTech, or National Diploma in Chemical, Mechatronic, or Electronic Engineering.
• Minimum 5–10 years' experience as a Control & Instrumentation Engineer.
• Professional registration with ECSA will be advantageous.
• Strong knowledge of process control principles, instrumentation technologies, and control elements.
• Experience with flow, temperature, pressure, level, and related process instrumentation.
• Strong knowledge of DCS, PLC, and ESD systems.
• Knowledge of functional safety standards, including IEC 61508.
• Knowledge of intrinsic safety standards, including SANS 60079 and SANS 10108.
• Experience or knowledge of analyzer systems will be advantageous.
• Strong leadership, organisational, and interpersonal skills.
• Self-starter with a proactive, driven, and "go-getter" approach to achieving deliverables.
• Ability to work independently and effectively within a team environment.
• Strong communication and report-writing skills in English.
• Ability to understand and communicate complex technical systems and problem statements.
• Organised, self-disciplined, and able to manage multiple priorities effectively.
• Good client-facing and business development skills with the ability to market engineering services.
• Valid Code B/EB driver's licence with own transport and the ability to drive manual transmission vehicles.
