Our client is seeking an experienced and hands-on Machine Shop Supervisor to oversee the day-to-day operations of the machine shop and lead a team of approximately 10 machinists and apprentices.
The successful candidate will be responsible for production planning, CNC machine setup and programming, quality control, tooling, staff management and continuous improvement. The role requires a strong technical understanding of CNC machining, particularly CNC lathes, machining centres and Mastercam programming, combined with the ability to manage production efficiently and achieve on. They must be comfortable getting involved on the shop floor-time delivery targets.
Machine Shop Supervision
Manage, supervise and coordinate a team of approximately 10 machinists and apprentices.
Allocate daily duties and monitor staff productivity.
Ensure machines, operators and resources are effectively utilised.
Provide technical guidance and support to machinists.
Monitor production progress and address bottlenecks promptly.
Ensure a safe, clean and productive machine-shop environment.
CNC Programming & Machine Setup
Perform and oversee CNC machine setups.
Develop, modify and optimise CNC programmes using Mastercam.
Supervise the operation of CNC lathes, machining centres and manual machines.
Interpret engineering drawings, specifications and machining requirements.
Select appropriate machining methods, tooling and cutting parameters.
Troubleshoot machining and programming issues.
Optimise programmes and processes to improve productivity and reduce cycle times.
Production Planning & Scheduling
Plan daily production requirements and machine loading.
Schedule work according to production priorities and available capacity.
Monitor production schedules and ensure on-time delivery.
Identify potential production delays and implement corrective action.
Coordinate machine availability, labour and tooling requirements.
Ensure efficient workflow throughout the machine shop.
Quality Control
Conduct and oversee first-off inspections.
Ensure components are manufactured according to drawings and specifications.
Monitor quality throughout the production process.
Investigate non-conformances and implement corrective actions.
Work closely with the Quality Department where applicable.
Ensure inspection equipment and measuring processes are used correctly.
Tooling & Consumables
Select appropriate cutting tools and tooling for machining requirements.
Monitor and manage tool life.
Maintain adequate tooling availability.
Identify opportunities to reduce tooling costs and improve tool performance.
Ensure tooling is correctly maintained, stored and used.
Maintenance
Coordinate routine and preventative machine maintenance.
Report machine breakdowns and coordinate repairs with maintenance personnel or external service providers.
Minimise machine downtime and production interruptions.
Monitor machine condition and identify potential maintenance requirements.
Staff Management & Development
Train, coach and mentor machinists and apprentices.
Monitor individual and team performance.
Conduct performance reviews and provide constructive feedback.
Identify skills gaps and arrange appropriate training.
Ensure employees follow standard operating procedures and company policies.
Manage attendance, discipline and performance in accordance with company procedures.
Health & Safety
Ensure strict compliance with Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
Ensure safe operating procedures are followed on all machinery.
Ensure appropriate PPE is worn at all times.
Identify and address workplace hazards.
Report and investigate incidents where required.
Promote a strong safety culture within the machine shop.
Continuous Improvement
Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the machine shop.
Implement and maintain 5S principles.
Identify opportunities for Lean Manufacturing improvements.
Monitor and improve OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness).
Reduce waste, downtime, scrap and rework.
Lead problem-solving initiatives and implement effective corrective actions.
Conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) on production and quality issues.
Establish and monitor improvement actions.
Grade 12 / Matric.
Relevant Mechanical Engineering, Toolmaking, Fitting & Machining or CNC qualification/trade.
Qualified Fitter & Turner, Toolmaker, Turner/Machinist or equivalent would be highly advantageous.
5+ years' experience in a CNC machining environment.
Proven experience supervising or leading a machine shop/team.
Strong hands-on experience with CNC lathes and machining centres.
Proven Mastercam programming experience.
Strong knowledge of CNC machine setup and operation.
Experience interpreting technical drawings and engineering specifications.
Strong understanding of cutting tools, tooling selection and tool-life management.
Experience with production planning and machine loading.
Strong quality-control and first-off inspection experience.
Good understanding of OHS requirements within a manufacturing environment.
