The role

Responsible for putting measures in place for the prevention of falls of ground on the operations in area of responsibility through providing effective input into Rock Engineering designs as well as support systems and layouts for the operations.

Responsibilities will include but not limited to

Ensures effective Rock Engineering service delivery and support to the Mining Operations, Mine Planning, Survey, and Geology sections
Ensure adherence to organisational best practice and legislative requirements
Actively participate in creating a safe mining environment
Maintain effective stakeholder relationships
Ensure successful teamwork and supervision of Rock Engineering resources
Continuous improvement of the Rock Engineering function
Develop quality controls to ensure alignment of operational Rock Engineering interventions, systems, and processes with standardization requirements as well as policies, procedures, and operating standards
Analyse and interpret Rock Engineering data and information to identify changes in the production environment, defects and safety risks
Conduct regular inspections and ensure problems are addressed proactively and aligned with Rock Engineering requirements
Ensure that operating standards, policies, and procedures are appropriate and clearly understood
Ensure that all activities are performed in line with the Mine Health and Safety Act, and the Minerals Act
Provide coaching and advice to operational stakeholders related to strata control services and support aligned to best practices
Provide input into the development of safety standards, processes, policies, and procedures
Provides guidance to Senior Leadership on technical risk management and relevant mitigating actions
Support the Life of Mine Plan process where applicable
Develop and maintain the technology roadmap for rock engineering
Industry contribution, monitoring and liaison in terms of Strata Control function and statutory requirements, through but not limited to, Mine Professional Associations, ECSA, and Chamber of Mines

Requirements

BSc Degree / Diploma in Mining Engineering or a related science field
Chamber of Mines Certificate in Rock Mechanics
SANIRE Membership
5 years’ experience in Rock Engineering within the Coal mining industry
Experience in Quality Control and Auditing of Rock Engineering systems and services
In-depth understanding of relevant safety and mining legislation including: The Mine Health and Safety Act and the Minerals and Energy Act.
Good knowledge of Seriti Safety and Sustainable development policies, procedures and standards
Good understanding of relevant legislation pertaining to the Mining Industry including the Mine Health Act.
Sound knowledge of Seriti Rock Engineering and Operational policies, procedures, standards and guidelines
Computer literacy (MS Office, SAP or equivalent)
Valid drivers’ license
In possession or able to obtain a valid Certificate of Fitness

Advantageous

Advanced certificate in Rock Engineering and/or MSc in Rock Engineering
Management Development Programme
Practical Mining Production experience
Experience in ICAM methodology
