Senior Platform & DevOps Engineer (Cloud/PHP)

Location: Sandton, Johannesburg (100% In-Office)

Duration: 3–6 Month Contract

TL;DR

We are looking for an experienced Senior Infrastructure / Platform Engineer to help modernize our web infrastructure and transition our platform into a highly optimized, multi-tenant environment for our subscribers. We currently scale with high-performance Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP stacks, and we want someone who can evaluate our current setup, bring fresh architectural ideas from their own experience, and build out a secure, scalable, and automated deployment strategy.

Your task

This is a critical, high-impact contract role with two major objectives:

1. Architect & Automate: Evaluate our cloud environment, refine our application routing, and automate our infrastructure provisioning pipeline across cloud and edge providers.
2. Upskill & Empower: Work side-by-side with our internal development team in our Sandton office. You will actively transfer your DevOps, automation, and infrastructure knowledge so our existing staff can seamlessly run the platform once the transition is complete.

Ideal background

• Infrastructure Strategy & Automation: Designing and scripting automated, repeatable deployment patterns for our tenant environments.
• Edge Routing & Security: Designing secure edge configurations to manage subdomains, optimize web traffic, and keep core server environments fully protected.
• PHP Application Refactoring: Collaborating with our developers to review and refactor legacy PHP code constraints, making the application seamless to deploy across multiple isolated nodes.
• Knowledge Transfer: Running hands-on pairing sessions, documenting the final architecture, and mentoring our staff to take full operational ownership.

Experience

• 5+ Years of Experience navigating high-performance Linux/LAMP environments, application optimization, and public cloud infrastructure.
• Advanced Web Routing & Network Expertise: Strong hands-on experience with cloud networks, reverse proxies, edge security platforms, and DNS management.
• Strong PHP Core: Deep understanding of PHP backend development, filesystem interactions, and database connectivity.
• The Heart of a Mentor: Excellent communication skills and a passion for teaching, documentation, and training existing team members.
