COMMUNITY AND HOME BASED PALLIATIVE CARE DOCTOR

St Luke's Combined Hospices

St Luke’s Combined Hospices is seeking a qualified and experienced Doctor for a half-day post to provide palliative medical care to community and home-based patients, while supporting their families and our interdisciplinary team.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide end-of-life medical care, including pain and symptom management.
  • Visit patients at community sites, in their homes and at day hospices.
  • Support Community Nurses with complex cases, including telehealth guidance.
  • Prescribe medication and maintain accurate clinical records.
  • Participate in family meetings and refer patients for psychosocial or spiritual support where needed.
  • Build relationships with local healthcare facilities.
  • Submit monthly activity reports and medical aid reports.
  • Participate in team meetings, clinical training and staff development.
  • Maintain professional, clinical and medico-legal standards.

Minimum requirements

  • A recognised medical degree (MBChB).
  • At least 10 years’ combined experience in a patient care environment.
  • Registration with the HPCSA.
  • Experience in clinical risk management and safety protocols.
  • A valid, unendorsed driver’s licence.
  • Willingness to travel weekly to the communities we serve.

A postgraduate qualification in Palliative Medicine and/or experience in a palliative care setting would be an advantage. Fluency in at least two official languages and an understanding of palliative care and its role in society would also be advantageous.
