Our client, a well-established healthcare facility based in Louis Trichardt, is looking for an experienced Unit Manager – Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to provide clinical, operational and people leadership within the ICU.
This is a hands-on leadership role for an experienced critical-care nursing professional who can maintain high standards of patient care while effectively managing the nursing team, resources, compliance requirements and day-to-day operations of the unit.
The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring safe, evidence-based care for critically ill patients requiring advanced monitoring and life-support interventions, while driving staff development, quality improvement and patient safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide clinical leadership and ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality and evidence-based nursing care to critically ill patients.
- Lead and support the ICU nursing team, ensuring appropriate staffing levels, resource allocation and clinical standards.
- Oversee the management of patients requiring advanced monitoring and life-support interventions.
- Ensure adherence to critical care protocols, infection prevention and control standards and emergency procedures.
- Manage the day-to-day operational requirements of the ICU.
- Monitor staff performance, competency and adherence to clinical standards.
- Identify training and development needs and support the ongoing development of the ICU team.
- Promote effective teamwork, communication and a positive working environment.
- Ensure effective utilisation of human, clinical and other resources.
- Monitor equipment and resource requirements and escalate shortages or operational issues where necessary.
- Drive quality improvement initiatives and monitor patient outcomes and clinical indicators.
- Participate in clinical audits and implement corrective actions where required.
- Promote a strong culture of patient safety, accountability and continuous improvement.
- Ensure patients and their families receive a consistently high standard of care and patient experience.
- Maintain accurate clinical and operational documentation and ensure compliance with hospital information systems.
- Ensure compliance with relevant healthcare regulations, hospital policies and professional nursing standards.
What We’re Looking For
- Registered Nurse with current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
- Post-basic qualification in Critical Care Nursing – essential.
- Post-basic qualification in Nursing Administration or Management will be advantageous.
- Minimum 5 years’ nursing experience.
- At least 2–3 years’ experience in an ICU leadership or Unit Management role.
- Sound knowledge of critical care principles, mechanical ventilation, haemodynamic monitoring, infection prevention and control, and emergency procedures.
- Proven experience in staff management, quality improvement, resource management and operational planning.
- Computer literacy and familiarity with hospital information systems.
- Strong clinical leadership and decision-making capability.
- Excellent people management, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure in a critical care environment.
- Patient-centred approach with a strong commitment to quality and patient safety.
- Strong organisational skills and an ability to manage competing operational priorities.
