Job Overview

We are seeking an Intermediate Customs Entry Clerk to prepare, validate, and process import and export declarations in line with SARS requirements. You will ensure accurate documentation, timely cargo release, and reliable data, while maintaining strong client communication.

Minimum Requirements

  • Customs-related training or certifications (e.g., SA customs courses or regional freight forwarding qualification).
  • 2 years’ experience in customs, logistics, or freight forwarding (including internships or entry-level roles).
  • Basic understanding of import/export documentation.
  • Interest in developing customs knowledge.
  • Computer literacy (MS Office, PDF processing, data entry systems).
  • Attention to detail and strong administrative discipline (also overlaps slightly with soft skills but fits well here in an operational context).

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, verify, and submit import and export declarations (SAD/CCD) with correct tariff classification, valuation, quantity, origin, permits, and regulatory data.
  • Examine documentation such as invoices, bills of lading, packing lists, and shipping statements to ensure compliance with SARS and foreign trade regulations.
  • Calculate duties, VAT, and other border taxes based on tariff headings, customs value, and applicable schedules.
  • Prepare Vouchers of Correction (SAD-504) for amendments to tariff, customs value, origin, quantity, or shipment details.
  • Ensure VoCs are processed via SARS EDI, in line with requirements that prohibit manual submissions for refund-related amendments.
  • Assist with preparing DA66 refund/drawback applications (eFiling ARD system), ensuring required documents (import/export CCDs, proof of payment/export, schedules) are complete before submission.
  • Liaise with customers to obtain missing evidence and follow up on SARS requests or queries until finalization.
  • Flag any irregularities or potential compliance issues to the Senior Agent or Supervisor immediately.
  • Provide timely updates to internal teams, and customers regarding entry progress, queries, and release status.
  • Support exception handling, delays, and clarifications required by SARS or regulatory bodies.
