Electrical Draughtsperson and Drawing Controller
TEST-A-RELAY
Date: 21 October 2026
Vacancy
Position: Electrical Draughtsperson and Drawing Controller
Location: Gauteng Head Office, Centurion
Remuneration: R25,000–R30,000 gross per month, depending on experience and capability.
Test-A-Relay is a specialist electrical engineering business with more than four decades of experience in protection, control and metering. Our work spans electrical field services, LV and MV switchgear, panel assembly, retrofits, containerised substations, E-Houses and substation projects for mining, industrial and utility customers.
Purpose of the Role
We are looking for a capable electrical draughtsperson who can produce accurate, practical drawings and take ownership of our drawing management system. You will prepare drawings yourself, coordinate and check outsourced drafting work, and control drawings received from suppliers and project teams. Our engineering team will provide technical guidance, review and approval, and support your development in the role.
You will ensure that engineering, manufacturing, assembly and field teams have the correct approved drawings at the right time. Working closely with Engineering, Project Execution, Procurement, Quality and our Centres of Excellence, you will maintain traceable drawing records that support our ISO 9001 quality management requirements from initial design through to final as-built handover.
Key Duties and Responsibilities Electrical drawing production
- Prepare and update LV and MV single-line diagrams, protection and control schematics, AC and DC auxiliary circuits, wiring diagrams, terminal plans and cable schedules.
- Compile substation lighting and small-power layouts, distribution board schedules, earthing layouts and cable routing drawings from approved engineering inputs.
- Produce panel general arrangements, equipment layouts and assembly details; coordinate dimensions, cut-outs and interfaces with mechanical and manufacturing teams.
- Incorporate approved equipment data, engineering changes, site mark-ups and test findings into drawing packages and final as-built records.
Subcontractor Coordination and Drawing Quality
- Track drafting workloads and flag capacity constraints to Engineering and Project Execution so additional drafting support can be arranged.
- Issue clear drafting briefs covering scope, engineering inputs, templates, deliverables, revision rules and due dates; track progress and close outstanding actions.
- With engineering support, check internal and subcontracted drawings for completeness, consistency, legibility, cross-references, equipment details, terminal numbering and wiring continuity.
- Coordinate supplier drawings with project schematics and assembly requirements; resolve missing information and conflicting interfaces with the responsible technical teams.
- Record review comments, return drawings for correction and confirm comments are closed before routing them for engineering approval.
- Ensure technical design decisions and final approvals remain with the designated engineering authority; escalate discrepancies before drawings are released.
Drawing Control and ISO Documentation
- Maintain the master drawing register and controlled repository, including drawing numbers, titles, revisions, issue status, approval records and distribution history.
- Control editable CAD files and issued PDFs; use consistent templates, symbols, numbering, file naming and revision descriptions.
- Manage drawings received from subcontractors, suppliers and customers, retaining their original references and linking them to the correct project and equipment.
- Release drawings through the agreed review and approval process, with a clear purpose such as review, manufacture, installation or as-built handover.
- Ensure manufacturing, assembly and site teams can identify and access the current approved revision; withdraw or clearly identify superseded copies and retain their history.
- Track drawing changes and receipt acknowledgements; coordinate the impact on work already in manufacture, assembly or installation before revised drawings are implemented.
- Compile final drawing packs and handover registers, maintain controlled access and retention records, and support audits and corrective actions with traceable evidence.
Minimum Requirements
- Relevant electrical draughting qualification, electrical engineering diploma or equivalent demonstrated industry experience.
- At least two years of relevant electrical draughting experience, with exposure to LV or MV schematics, protection and control, or switchgear drawings.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD; experience with AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN would be advantageous.
- Practical ability to interpret electrical schematics, supplier documentation, terminal details and manufacturing or site mark-ups.
- Ability to check drawings against engineering inputs and coordinate drafting deliverables with support from the engineering team.
- Working knowledge of drawing registers, revision control and document control; experience in an ISO 9001 quality management environment would be advantageous.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills, clear communication and a valid driver’s licence.
Technical Experience Highly Advantageous
- MV switchgear, LV panels, protection relays, CT and VT circuits, interlocks, metering and auxiliary supplies.
- Containerised substations, E-Houses, skid and mobile substations, including lighting, small power and earthing.
- Switchgear retrofits, manufacturing and assembly documentation, FAT and commissioning mark-ups, and as-built handover packs.
- CAD template and symbol-library development, bills of materials and links between drawings and procurement schedules.
- Electronic document management systems and coordination of electrical and mechanical drawings.
Key Skills and Competencies
- Takes ownership of drawing accuracy, delivery commitments and document traceability.
- Pays close attention to detail and understands how a drawing error can affect assembly, safety and commissioning.
- Plans priorities across several projects and communicates capacity constraints early.
- Gives clear review feedback and follows through until corrections are complete.
- Works confidently with engineers, suppliers, subcontractors and workshop or field teams.
- Improves systems practically and consistently follows agreed procedures.
Working Conditions
The role is based at our Gauteng head office in Centurion, with regular interaction with manufacturing, assembly and field-service teams. Occasional workshop and site visits may be required to verify dimensions, resolve drawing queries and capture as-built information. The position combines hands-on CAD work with coordination, checking and document control across multiple projects, under the technical guidance and oversight of our engineering team.
What Success Looks Like
Within the first six months, you will have:
- Established a reliable master drawing register with clear ownership, issue status and revision history for active projects.
- Made current approved drawings readily available to manufacturing, assembly and site teams, with superseded drawings controlled.
- Delivered accurate drawing packages against agreed deadlines and reduced drawing-related rework.
- Applied consistent subcontractor briefs and review records, and closed drawing comments with engineering support.
- Improved completion of as-built packs and provided traceable drawing records for internal quality reviews and audits.
Why Join Test A Relay
You will work alongside experienced technical teams on practical electrical projects where good drawings directly improve manufacturing quality and site execution. We value accountability, teamwork and continuous improvement, and offer opportunities to develop your technical skills and strengthen the systems that support reliable project delivery.
Application Process
