Estimator - Substations

Our client is seeking an experienced Estimator – Substations to join its Transmission and Distribution team. This opportunity is ideal for a commercially astute professional with a strong technical background and proven experience preparing competitive cost estimates for high-voltage and medium-voltage substation projects.

The successful candidate will play a key role in tender preparation, cost modelling, risk assessment and commercial bid support across South Africa and the broader region.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare detailed cost estimates for HV and MV substation projects.
• Analyse tender documentation, electrical drawings, technical specifications, Bills of Quantities (BOQs) and customer requirements.
• Calculate material, labour, equipment, plant and subcontractor costs.
• Compile pricing schedules, tender submissions and commercial proposals.
• Review engineering designs and identify scope gaps, technical risks and cost-saving opportunities.
• Liaise with engineering teams to clarify technical requirements and evaluate alternative construction methodologies.
• Develop pricing strategies, contingencies, bid assumptions and tender qualifications.
• Obtain and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations.
• Maintain estimating databases and historical cost information.
• Prepare tender reports, present recommendations to management and support bid clarification meetings.
• Assist with contract reviews, tender negotiations and project handovers following successful awards.

Minimum Requirements

• Diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying or a related field.
• 5–10 years' estimating experience in the electrical, transmission, distribution or construction sector.
• Proven experience estimating HV and MV substation projects.
• Strong understanding of EPC, construction and project costing principles.
• Ability to interpret electrical drawings, technical specifications and BOQs.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and estimating software.
