SUMMARY

The Senior Trails Guide is responsible for delivering exceptional wildlife experiences through guided walking safaris, game drives, and interpretive bush experiences while always ensuring guest safety. This role requires extensive bush knowledge, leadership skills, and a strong commitment to conservation, guest satisfaction, and operational excellence. The Senior Trails Guide also mentors junior guides and ensures adherence to reserve and lodge standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead guided walking safaris and game drives in a safe and professional manner
  • Provide guests with in-depth knowledge of wildlife, ecosystems, flora, fauna, and conservation practices
  • Ensure the safety of guests, staff, and wildlife during all guided activities
  • Conduct rifle handling and safety procedures in accordance with legal and reserve requirements
  • Mentor, train, and assess junior guides and trackers
  • Assist in planning and coordinating daily safari activities
  • Maintain guide equipment, vehicles, and rifles in excellent condition
  • Monitor animal movements and communicate sightings with the guiding team
  • Deliver outstanding guest service and build strong guest relationships
  • Ensure compliance with lodge SOPs, reserve rules, and environmental regulations
  • Assist with conservation initiatives, wildlife monitoring, and anti-poaching awareness
  • Support lodge operations when required, including transfers and special guest requests
  • Uphold the lodge’s standards of professionalism and hospitality

Qualifications & Experience FGASA Level 2 or higher (essential) Trails Guide qualification (NQF 4 or equivalent) Valid ARH (Advanced Rifle Handling) qualification Valid First Aid certificate PDP (Professional Driving Permit) Valid driver's licence Minimum 4-6 years' experience in a guiding role within a luxury lodge or private reserve Previous experience leading walking safaris independently Experience mentoring and training junior guides Knowledge & Skills Extensive knowledge of wildlife, birding, botany, and ecosystems Strong leadership and team management skills Excellent guest interaction and communication skills High level of rifle competency and bush safety awareness Strong tracking abilities Good vehicle maintenance knowledge Ability to work under pressure and in remote environments Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills Passion for conservation and environmental sustainability Personal Attributes Professional and well-presented Calm and confident under pressure Strong attention to detail Guest-focused with excellent interpersonal skills Physically fit and able to work long hours outdoors Honest, reliable, and responsible Passionate about wildlife and the safari industry
